Lesson Structure
1. Warm-up (3 minutes)
Activity: Pass the Ball Game
- Students sit in a circle
- Pass a soft ball around while music plays
- When music stops, the student holding the ball says "Happy Birthday!"
- Repeat 2-3 times to energize the class and introduce the birthday theme
2. Presentation (16 minutes)
Phonics Introduction - Letter "P" (8 minutes)
- Show large letter "P" on board (both uppercase and lowercase)
- Demonstrate the /p/ sound clearly: "P-P-P"
- Students repeat the sound 3 times together
- Practice with mouth movements: "Put your lips together, then pop them apart!"
- Chant: "P says /p/, P says /p/, P-P-P!"
Vocabulary Introduction (8 minutes)
Target Words: pasta, popcorn, pizza
For each word:
- Show flashcard with clear picture
- Say the word slowly emphasizing the initial /p/ sound
- Students repeat 3 times (whole class, then groups, then individuals)
- Connect to phonics: "Pizza starts with P! /p/-/p/-pizza!"
Presentation sequence:
- "This is pasta. /p/-/p/-pasta. We eat pasta at parties!"
- "This is popcorn. /p/-/p/-popcorn. Popcorn is yummy!"
- "This is pizza. /p/-/p/-pizza. I love pizza at birthday parties!"
3. Activities (Within Presentation)
Activity 1: Listen and Repeat (4 minutes)
- Play audio recording of each word
- Students listen carefully, then repeat
- Focus on correct pronunciation of initial /p/ sound
- Repeat each word 2-3 times with different intonations (happy, excited, quiet)
Activity 2: Point and Say (4 minutes)
- Display all three flashcards on the board
- Teacher points to random pictures
- Students identify and say the word loudly and clearly
- Gradually increase speed for fun
- Individual students take turns pointing and having classmates respond
4. Practice (15 minutes)
Practice Activity 1: Phonics Sorting (5 minutes)
- Give students small pictures of various objects
- Students sort items that start with /p/ sound into a "P basket"
- Include: pasta, popcorn, pizza, pen, pig, book, cat, dog
- Students say "/p/ for pasta!" as they sort
Practice Activity 2: Birthday Party Role Play (5 minutes)

- One student is the "birthday child," other is the "guest"
- Practice mini-dialogue:
- Guest: "Happy Birthday! I brought [pasta/popcorn/pizza]!"

Practice Activity 3: Memory Game (5 minutes)
- Show all three flashcards for 10 seconds
- Hide one card
- Students identify which food is missing
- Add challenge: students must use complete sentence "The [pasta/popcorn/pizza] is missing!"

- Quick review: Teacher shows flashcards, students shout out words
