A six-scene Christmas production (approximately 40 minutes)
[Lights up on GABRIEL center stage, looking both excited and terrified. He paces back and forth, occasionally looking upward.]
GABRIEL: (speaking to himself) Me? Of all the angels in heaven... ME?
(sings)
"THE BIGGEST ASSIGNMENT"
Verse 1: Out of countless seraphim and cherubim galore The Boss picked me for this celestial chore I'm just a messenger, I carry the mail But this time the message cannot fail!
Chorus: It's the biggest assignment in eternity's span God becoming a baby, becoming a man How can infinite fit in something so small? The Word made flesh for one and all!
(HIDDEN CHOIR joins softly) HIDDEN CHOIR: (harmony) Wonder of wonders, mystery divine GABRIEL: (overlapping) But what if I stutter? What if I'm not fine?
Verse 2: I've announced births before, but never like this Where virgin conception seals heaven's bliss The Trinity's plan through a young maiden's womb But what if she faints? What if she says "doom"?
Chorus: It's the biggest assignment in eternity's span God becoming a baby, becoming a man How can the Creator fit in creation's frame? All for love, all in His name!
HIDDEN CHOIR: (building) Wonder of wonders, mystery divine GABRIEL: (with growing confidence) The honor is mine, this moment is mine!
Bridge: (speaking, with humor) I mean, I've got my lines all memorized "Fear not, Mary, you're highly prized" But what if she asks me to explain the how? Do I say "Divine physics class starts now"?
(singing again, with joy) No, I'll trust the Spirit's overshadowing power This is heaven's most glorious hour!
Final Chorus: It's the biggest assignment in eternity's span God becoming a baby, becoming a man I'm the chosen angel to share this good news Heaven's ambassador, I cannot refuse!
HIDDEN CHOIR: (crescendo) Wonder of wonders, mystery divine GABRIEL: The glory is His, but the privilege is mine!
(GABRIEL straightens his shoulders, takes a deep breath, and exits with newfound confidence)
[Lights shift to MARY's home. She's reading scrolls, peaceful and contemplative. GABRIEL enters, still slightly nervous.]
GABRIEL: (clearing throat) Um... Mary?
MARY: (startled, dropping her scroll) Oh! Who... who are you?
GABRIEL: (trying to sound official) Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God!
MARY: (skeptical) You seem awfully... enthusiastic about this.
"THE OVERSHADOWING"
GABRIEL: (singing) You will conceive and give birth to a son Jesus His name, God's chosen one He'll reign on David's throne forever more The kingdom of heaven opening its door
MARY: (singing, hesitant) But how can this be? I know not a man This seems impossible, beyond any plan You speak of conception, but I am pure How can I trust what seems so unsure?
Chorus: BOTH: The Spirit will overshadow you MARY: (questioning) Overshadow me? GABRIEL: (affirming) The power of the Most High will cover you MARY: (wondering) Cover me? BOTH: Nothing is impossible with God above All things are possible through His love
MARY: (speaking, contemplatively) Joseph... what will Joseph say?
GABRIEL: (singing) The Holy Spirit will make all things clear Trust in the Lord, cast away your fear
MARY: (singing, with growing faith) I am the servant of the Lord Most High If this is His will, then here am I Though I don't understand this mystery I'll trust in His overshadowing of me
Final Chorus: BOTH: The Spirit will overshadow you MARY: (with quiet strength) I believe it's true GABRIEL: The power of the Most High will cover you MARY: (kneeling) I surrender to You BOTH: Nothing is impossible with God above All things are possible through His love
(GABRIEL exits. MARY remains kneeling in prayer as lights dim.)
[Lights up on JOSEPH pacing angrily. MARY sits quietly to one side.]
JOSEPH: (shouting) Pregnant? PREGNANT? Mary, how could you do this to me?
MARY: (softly) Joseph, please listen...
JOSEPH: I've heard enough! This engagement is over!
(GABRIEL appears)
GABRIEL: Not so fast, Joseph!
JOSEPH: (startled) Who are you? Another one of Mary's... friends?
"THE ANGRY DEBATE"
JOSEPH: (singing angrily) Don't try to fool me with heavenly tales When earthly evidence clearly prevails My bride-to-be has betrayed my trust Our marriage plans have turned to dust!
GABRIEL: (singing firmly) Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary as your wife, for heaven's sake The child within her is from God above Conceived by the Spirit, born out of love
JOSEPH: (sarcastically) Oh sure, an angel, how convenient now When my reputation's destroyed somehow The whole town will whisper, the whole town will know That Joseph's bride had far to go!
GABRIEL: (more forcefully) This child will save people from their sin Emmanuel, God with us, let faith begin Don't let your pride stand in the way Of God's great plan revealed today!
JOSEPH: (breaking down) But how can I trust what I cannot see? How can I believe this mystery?
[MARY rises and approaches them both]
MARY: (singing gently) Joseph, my love, I know this is hard But my heart remains true, though the path seems starred I didn't choose this, but I choose to obey The Lord's will be done, come what may
Chorus: (All three) ALL: The Spirit will overshadow us JOSEPH: (reluctantly) Overshadow us? MARY: (with faith) The power of the Most High will cover us GABRIEL: (encouraging) He covers us ALL: Nothing is impossible with God above All things are possible through His love
JOSEPH: (singing, with growing acceptance) If God has chosen this humble way Then I'll stand by Mary, come what may Though I don't understand this mystery I'll trust in His overshadowing of me
Final Chorus: ALL: The Spirit will overshadow us JOSEPH: (with resolve) I believe it's true MARY: (with joy) The power of the Most High will cover us GABRIEL: (triumphant) He covers you ALL: Nothing is impossible with God above All things are possible through His love
(GABRIEL exits. JOSEPH takes MARY's hand as lights dim.)
[Lights up on JOSEPH and MARY traveling. JOSEPH is leading a donkey (or miming). They're both tired but closer than before.]
MARY: (gently) Joseph, are you sorry? About all of this?
JOSEPH: (thoughtfully) Sorry? Mary, I've never been more sure of anything in my life.
"OUR LOVE WILL CARRY US"
JOSEPH: (singing) Verse 1: When I first heard the angel's news I thought my world had blown a fuse But now I see God's perfect plan You're still my girl, I'm still your man
MARY: (singing) Verse 2: I was so afraid you'd walk away Leave me alone to face each day But here you are, right by my side My faithful love, my humble guide
Chorus: BOTH: Our love will carry us down this dusty road JOSEPH: (bungling but sweet) Even when I trip and drop our load MARY: (laughing) Even when the path seems long and rough BOTH: Our love will carry us, and love's enough
JOSEPH: (speaking, as they walk) Mary, I've been thinking... what if I'm not good enough to be the father of God's son?
MARY: (speaking, lovingly) Joseph, God chose you too. He knew your heart.
JOSEPH: (singing) Verse 3: I'm just a carpenter with calloused hands But I'll protect you both, I'll make my stands I'll teach Him how to use a saw And love Him like He's truly... well, He is... my... (getting tongue-tied)
MARY: (singing, helping him) Verse 4: You stumble on your words, you're clumsy too But your heart is gold, your love is true God sees what I see every day A man who leads with love, not just what he can say
Chorus: BOTH: Our love will carry us down this dusty road JOSEPH: Even when I'm nervous and my words explode MARY: Even when the future's still unknown BOTH: Our love will carry us, we're not alone
(They approach different locations)
JOSEPH: (calling out) Excuse me! Any room at the inn?
INNKEEPER'S VOICE: (offstage) Full up! Try down the street!
JOSEPH: (to MARY) Don't worry, love, we'll find a place.
(They move to another spot)
JOSEPH: (calling out) Please, my wife is about to give birth!
ANOTHER VOICE: (offstage) Sorry, not a single room!
MARY: (gently) Joseph, perhaps that stable behind the inn?
JOSEPH: (determined) If that's where God wants His son to be born, then it's the most royal palace in the world.
Final Chorus: BOTH: Our love will carry us to wherever we're led JOSEPH: Even if it's hay instead of a bed MARY: Even in a stable, humble and low BOTH: Our love will carry us, this much we know
(They exit together toward the stable)
[Lights up on three SHEPHERDS sitting around, looking utterly bored. They're surrounded by sheep (or miming).]
DO: (sighing) Another night, another sheep count.
RE: (yawning) Do you ever wonder if there's more to life than this?
MI: (sarcastically) Oh sure, Re. Maybe tomorrow we'll count sheep AND goats.
"JUST ANOTHER NIGHT"
DO: (singing) Verse 1: Just another night out in the fields Just another day that nothing yields Watch the sheep, keep them safe Life's become a boring chafe
RE: (singing) Verse 2: Same old grass, same old sky Same old "baa" and "bleat" and "sigh" Is this really all there is? This mundane shepherding biz?
MI: (singing) Verse 3: We're just working for the money Life's not sweet, it's not even honey Feel as blank as all our sheep Going through the motions deep
Chorus: ALL: Just another night, just another day DO: Nothing ever changes in the same old way RE: We're just like the sheep we're supposed to keep MI: Baa-ing through life, counting sleep, counting sheep ALL: Just another night, just another day Nothing ever changes... nothing ever changes...
DO: (speaking) You know what? I used to dream about doing something important.
RE: (speaking) Yeah, me too. Like being a warrior or a merchant.
MI: (speaking) Or even just... I don't know... mattering to someone.
(They don't notice GABRIEL has appeared and is listening)
GABRIEL: (singing, joining their melody without them noticing) Verse 4: What if purpose was heading your way? What if this was your most important day? What if heaven was about to break through? What if God had a mission for you?
(The SHEPHERDS suddenly realize someone else is singing)
DO: (jumping up) Who's there?
RE: (stammering) Where did you come from?
MI: (pointing) You're... you're glowing!
GABRIEL: (grinning) Fear not! I bring you good news of great joy!
"LOOK UP TO THE STAR"
GABRIEL: (singing) Look up to the star shining bright tonight Look up to the star, heaven's glorious light The Savior is born in the city of David Your mundane world has just been re-paved!
SHEPHERDS: (singing, amazed) DO: A star? RE: A Savior? MI: For us? ALL: Could it be true?
GABRIEL: (singing) You'll find Him wrapped in swaddling clothes In a manger bed where the cattle doze This is the sign that the Lord has given Today your purpose has been driven!
SHEPHERDS: (singing, with growing excitement) DO: No more just another night! RE: No more just another day! MI: Something's changing in the same old way! ALL: We're not just like the sheep we keep We're chosen witnesses, no time to sleep!
Final Chorus: ALL: Look up to the star shining bright tonight GABRIEL: (pointing) Look up to the star, heaven's glorious light SHEPHERDS: The Savior is born in the city of David ALL: Our mundane world has just been re-paved!
DO: (speaking) Come on, guys! Let's go find this baby!
RE: (speaking) Finally! Something worth doing!
MI: (speaking) Who knew sheep-watching was just the warm-up act?
(They all rush off stage following GABRIEL)
[Lights up on the stable. MARY holds the baby Jesus, JOSEPH stands protectively nearby. The THREE SHEPHERDS enter, led by GABRIEL.]
DO: (whispering in awe) Is that... is that Him?
MARY: (softly) Come closer. Don't be afraid.
RE: (amazed) He's so small...
MI: (emotionally) But look at Him. He's... He's perfect.
JOSEPH: (to the shepherds) You came because of the angel?
DO: (nodding) He told us we'd find the Savior here.
"EVERYTHING FINDS MEANING"
GABRIEL: (singing) Verse 1: Tonight a child was born who'll change the world Tonight the banner of hope was unfurled From shepherds' fields to carpenter's trade Every calling finds the mark that God has made
MARY: (singing) Verse 2: A young girl's "yes" to the impossible dream A virgin's womb and the Spirit's regime My quiet heart now holds the Prince of Peace In surrender, I've found my release
JOSEPH: (singing) Verse 3: A nervous man who almost walked away Now guards the Christ child on this holy day My clumsy hands will build Him toys and chairs But mostly I'll build Him a home filled with prayers
SHEPHERDS: (singing) Verse 4: DO: We thought we were just watching sheep RE: Thought life was boring, thought it was cheap MI: But we were watching for the Shepherd King ALL: Who came to give our lives meaning
Chorus: ALL: Everything finds meaning in the baby's cry MARY: Every fear and question now has a reply JOSEPH: Every broken heart and every weary soul SHEPHERDS: Can find in Him their purpose, can find in Him their goal ALL: Everything finds meaning, everything finds meaning now
GABRIEL: (singing, with joy) Verse 5: I was nervous about this big assignment But now I see God's perfect alignment From heaven's throne to an earthly stable God makes the impossible possible
MARY: (singing) The overshadowing Spirit is here
JOSEPH: (singing) The mystery's becoming clear
SHEPHERDS: (singing) DO: No more just another night RE: No more just another day MI: Everything has changed in the most wonderful way
Final Chorus: ALL: Everything finds meaning in the baby's cry Every fear and question now has a reply Every broken heart and every weary soul Can find in Him their purpose, can find in Him their goal
GABRIEL: (building to climax) From angels in heaven to shepherds in fields From carpenters' shops to the hope that He yields The Word became flesh and dwelt among us In Him every calling finds its true purpose!
ALL: Everything finds meaning, everything finds meaning Everything finds meaning now!
(The HIDDEN CHOIR joins for the final refrain)
HIDDEN CHOIR: (harmony) Glory to God in the highest! ALL: (melody) Everything finds meaning now! HIDDEN CHOIR: Peace on earth, good will toward men! ALL: Everything finds meaning now!
(All characters kneel around the manger as the lights slowly dim, except for a bright star light shining down on the Christ child)
GABRIEL: (speaking softly as the music fades) And so the greatest story ever told began... not with kings in palaces, but with ordinary people who said "yes" to an extraordinary God.
(Final tableau as curtain falls)
Scene 1: "The Biggest Assignment" - Upbeat, slightly nervous energy building to confidence. Gabriel's humor should come through in the spoken bridge.
Scene 2: "The Overshadowing" - Contemplative beginning, building through dialogue to faith. The chorus should feel mystical and powerful.
Scene 3: "The Angry Debate" - Strong, argumentative verses mellowing into harmony. Joseph's anger should be real but not harsh.
Scene 4: "Our Love Will Carry Us" - Sweet, folksy love song with gentle humor. Joseph's verbal stumbles should be endearing.
Scene 5: "Just Another Night" transitioning to "Look Up to the Star" - Begins mundane and listless, transforms into exciting revelation.
Scene 6: "Everything Finds Meaning" - Grand finale incorporating musical themes from earlier scenes. Should build to a powerful, joyful conclusion.
